hot off the needles: leg warmers with pattern (sort of)

just in time for birthday girl…

leg warmers wool

a pair of leg warmers to use when skating…

knit leg warmers

here’s how i made it. it’s just a 2×2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2…), knit in the round on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles using yarn leftover from a previous project.  i cast on 48 stitches and distributed them over 3 needles, then knit 2 purl 2  til my fingers fell off it was done.  i changed the yarn to add a few stripes along the way.

when knitting in the round and casting on stitches for a ribbed pattern like this, the number of stitches cast on needs to be divisible by 4 (for a 2×2 ribbing) so that the ribbing lines up. so 48, 52, whatever diameter tube is needed for the legs.

i sewed on a sprinkling of buttons, and that was it.

Cute! Buttons add a dose of that to lots of things. Love how they look on your legwarmers. Great job!

so adorable! i really must work on building my knitting muscles. my daughter needs a pair of leg warmers for ballet. she is without because i can’t bring myself to buy them knowing that they’re (probably) a very simple knitting project…but i can’t bring myself to knit them because i’m a chicken.
    meantime…her poor leggies suffer.
i’m so bad at sizing things. somehow i always manage to cast on too many/too few stitches, thus making my finished project too big/small after all the work. :(
    suggestions?

chicken? don’t be chicken. i’ll hold your hand through it (mostly so you don’t poke me in the eye with a needle when things get hard). this would be a good beginner project, you could do it flat on straight needles, and then sew a seam.

as for sizing, you do get a feel for it after a while, but to be perfectly honest, sometimes even if you follow a pattern exactly, using the exact same yarn and the same technique and same tension throughout, even if you work out the gauge first and do a test swatch… things can go weird. yarn harlot, who has knit a billion things, has dedicated many posts and chapters of her books to this phenomenon. my point is, if it happens, you’re not alone. it’s just experience, trial and error with a side of “close enough!” :)

      go for it shannon.

  10. So far knitting is ok. I can’t figure out how to fix my mistakes yet.
I want to make arm warmer just like your leg warmers.
    Your knitting skills are admirable!
    Love, Camille

sounds great camille. looking forward to your finished project. and like everything, fixing mistakes is harder than making them (but you’ll get there).

  11. Those came out so pretty! My daughter went bonkers over this – her favorite colors! But I reminded her that we’d have no use for such a thing in Florida. So she said “well thats why we should take a road trip!” ;)

BTW, I’m so excited – the girls & I will be taking a crochet class at the library at the end of this month. Its a start, right?

I *love* them! Some of the big fashion houses are coming out with fancy cashmere versions, but this means I can make my own (and choose my colours)!

    Thanks for the fabulous idea!
