i made this dress using new look pattern #6621 in a girls’ size 8. i just searched for the pattern online, and they have since reassigned it to a ladies’ blouse, so i don’t have the link to share.
the dress went together fairly easily, but i made note of a pattern error in one of the bodice pieces. it was about an inch too long in the back, which i only noticed after everything was stitched, of course, and the zipper placement wasn’t aligning quite right. i took it apart and fixed the error. it’s alright, my seam ripper and i have a long history together. other than that, it turned out well.
i lined it in chocolately brown satin…
i placed patch pockets on the front and adorned them with the sweetest little vintage buttons (borrowed from a thrifted shirt, more on that another time)…
i chose those buttons because they echoed the floral print on the dress. here on the back, you can see the floral pattern, along with the hidden zipper…
the part i didn’t share about this lil tunic dress? the fabric…
…came from a small round kitschy table cloth.
it was hard to place the pattern pieces because of the directional print on the fabric. but i did work it out (eventually), and i like how the scallops aligned at the neckline…
fabric for sewing doesn’t have to be purchased off the bolt at a fabric store. what are some of your favourite alternative sources for fabric? i’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Very nicely done. Very resourceful. I haven’t done any sewing in a long time, but I did make my wedding dress, many long years ago.

That dress is wonderful! I thought the neck was actually scalloped. Great job- you’ve inspired me to turn on the sewing machine again. I’ve been curling my lip at it lately as if somehow it’s the machine’s fault that I don’t know how to sew properly.

I sadly don’t have a sewing machine so I’m not able to experiment much with things like that. But my mom did remake a day dress of my grandmother’s – white polka dots on teal – into a more fitted dress for me. It’s one of my favourites. :)
The dress is beautiful. I like to repurpose old dresses to create something new. Especially something that was long and flowy has enough fabric to become a skirt or top or even sleeker version of what it was.

Ana, this is way too cute for sure. I love it. As for making clothing out of whatever, yes, I do aprons from tablecloths, I do boxer shorts from bed linen, library bags from pillowcases and bedlinen. I currently have some tablecloths that I would like to make into a wrap skirt for me, and I have a beautiful doona cover that will make a lovely apron for me and I would like to get some pj pants for me from it too. I do love the little buttons too.

I somehow have a small collection of interesting fabrics, slowly over the last several years I put them in a basket, with the intent to repurpose them “when I learn how to sew”. I have my husband’s crib sheets from when he was a wee one in France, but I still have no idea what I’m going to do with those! I’m “saving” them, but not sure for what! Sewing, photography – add those both to my to-do list! :)
this dress is absolutely adorable. great way to repurpose that table cloth. i was saving a bunch of things to repurpose down the line, but had to give most of them up in the move. :( hopefully goodwill will find them better homes.
