this was last year’s little garden. this year, i wanted to plant some veggies in a slightly larger space. the only option really was behind the deck, because the rest of the yard is fairly shady. you can see the layout of my yard here. so, this was the spot:
it took a while to dig out the roots and work in some composted matter (i’ll write more about composting one of these days). such a lot of work for such a small space, and it was further delayed by a long stretch of rainy days.
but i think like any gardener, new (that’s me) or experienced, will tell you: totally worth it.
i still have to add some trellis behind the cukes to allow them to climb a little, clean up the edges and add a fence around the whole thing to keep the bunnies and raccoons out. hopefully that will get done tomorrow, and hopefully before the neighbourhood critters hear about this free-for-all salad bar.
there is a little sunny spot just around the corner from the vegetables, which i’ve reserved for the plants the kids have chosen: a rose, a blueberry plant and a strawberry plant. they’ll be planting those themselves.

Yep, more space would be great, as you know those tomatoes are going to get big, yum! Isn’t asparagus a bi-annual? You can work it into it’s own bed enjoy years of asparagus, another yum, or yummy! It seems like it has been raining non-stop here, I have my tomatoes, but have not put them in the ground yet, I have a small raised bed. I just went with early girls and 100s sweets cherry tomato this year, my lovely heirloom brandywines just don’t seem to put out the production, but are so good!

thanks victoria. yes, i’m looking forward to the asparagus. they’re cute spindly things right now. and the tomatoes really do take up space once they get going, i noticed that last year! i gave them a little more elbow room this time. also, just try and stop me from posting photos come harvest time ;)
