last time, i mentioned i had made a place-holder for my ravelry account. if you’re not sure what i’m talking about, ravelry is a free online community for knitters, crocheters and pretty much all yarny enthusiasts. it started out as a way for the founding member, a blogger, to keep track of all the patterns and ideas floating around on the web. it has grown in popularity throughout the world and they recently hit 1 million users — wow! mark zuckerberg, do you knit? you may want to consider it…

there are tools on ravelry to help you keep track of current and future projects. when you enter a new project, there is a blank space with “no feature photo” written across it. very blah. so i’ve made these images that can be uploaded as place-holders until a proper photo can be taken.

what’s that? you did not just say “you have too much time” did you? good…. i’m watching you.

and finally, when things go wrong and you have to unravel a project, you can classify it as “frogged.” at least now you have a cute image to take away the sting a little bit.

as i was writing this, i noticed that this is my 150th post. if you’ve made it this far with me, through 50 and 100, you’ll have learned by now that i don’t have any giveaways or over-the-top celebration of that milestone. maybe at 200? (don’t get your hopes up)…

you just have my sincerest thanks for reading (or should i say enduring?). if you’ve told others about this blog, then you get bonus points! towards nothing in particular. again, sorry… ;-) this is, however, one of the last remaining ad-free places on the web! other than when i’m trying to sell you on my sense of humour, or on the fact that hand-knit socks really are better than store-bought, there are no advertisements or hidden agendas. and that’s all intentional. that’s gotta be worth something right?  i’m just waiting to make it big and sell out to the highest bidder… told ya, no hidden agendas here! nor fiscally viable business plans, either, it seems. hmm. might need to re-think all this…

weekend in a nutshell – the village people dropped by.

i received this gift, a lovely bundle of goodness. local yarn from sweden. some wool (which i’ve already put on the needles) and some linen (i have no idea what to make with that. ideas?)…

this scarf, which i’d forgotten behind on a visit, finally found its way home to me so i worked on finishing it and getting on to the next thing.

and this little guy helped me with some figure sketching.

friday archive dive ~ gratitude

i enjoyed reading all your first blog posts for last week’s archive dive.

a few of us felt that our first post was a little embarrassing or that it didn’t really sound like us. that first post can sometimes be the hardest, as can that first page, first step, that beginning of anything really. it reminds me of one of my favourite quotations from one of my favourite authors.

what a relief, that an accomplished writer can have those same feelings. sometimes, the best thing to do is just dive in. thanks to so many of you who did just that last week.

this week, with american thanksgiving coming up (we here have so been there, done that already ;-)), i’d love to get a collection of your writings on the topic below. get creative with it, it could mean different things to different people. i might throw my own link into the mix this week. remember to link to your actual post, not just to your blog url.

choose your own adventure recipe: cream of leek soup

ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp butter or extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 or 4 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 bunch of leeks, white part only, chopped coarsely
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup light cream
  • 1/4 cup wine (optional, white or red; if using wine, omit the cream or it will curdle.)
  • salt and pepper if desired

note: to chop the leeks, i cut off the green parts, then slice the white parts lengthwise into quarters…

directions

  1. in a large saucepan, melt the butter or heat the oil, then add the crushed garlic, stir. add the chopped leeks and peas and stir til they begin to soften.
  2. pour in the chicken stock, stir and let sit covered on low to medium heat to let the vegetables cook and fully soften.
  3. in a food processor or blender, purée the mixture until no large visible bits remain.
  4. return the purée into the saucepan, and stir in the cream, and if you wish, the wine.
  5. cook on low heat until the desired consistency is obtained (longer for a thicker soup)
  6. add salt and pepper if you wish.

now here is the tricky part. this soup is simple, fairly quick, and delicious (if you like leeks, peas, creamy soups, and such). but… it looks like green goop. so the key is in the presentation.

for the final reveal, you get to choose your own adventure! (don’t ever say i don’t let you guys have any fun…)
