about those lemons…

so. about those lemons.

lemons

after i use lemons in a recipe, i put them into a little bowl of water.

pop it in a crusty dirty microwave.

living in filth: dirty microwave

(i really feel badly for making you look at my dirty microwave. also, notice that this photo has no watermark? they can steal this photo!)

zap for 1 minute, or until water is bubbly and steams in microwave.

zap 1 minute or so

the steam helps loosen the splattered gunk inside the microwave so i can just wipe it out with a cloth. sometimes, i take the lemon (it gets hot, careful!) and rub it directly on the tough splatters.

soft cloth, lemon

but it works. all clean, and it smells lemony fresh.

clean microwave, pretty dish

wait, how’d that get in there?

(i figured i owed you something pretty to look at since subjecting you to the gunk in my microwave.)

this is my absolute favourite thrifted find…a figgjo turi design casserole dish in the “market” pattern, made in norway. isn’t it lovely?

pillow covers

oh, i have missed sewing! but i just didn’t know it… gathered tools and fabric

i mentioned before that we have some repair work going on in our home, and my craft studio has not been very accessible.  really, it’s just a small room i share with the washer, dryer, water heater and furnace in the basement, but i still think of it as a “studio” because it is where most of my craft supplies, fabric and sewing machines are kept. so i give it a nice name. it inspires me to create more. (ok fine, it just makes me feel all fancy and official, “i’ll be in my studio!” as i throw a shawl over my shoulder dramatically and descend to the laundry room ;-))

i’d put aside my sewing projects knowing i’d get back to them once the repairs were done and things were more accessible. but then, my friend tara asked me to make her some pillow covers. she said she wanted something for her living room, a couple of pillows that needed covers… something green, to inspire creativity. well, how could i say no?

by the way, i usually have no problem saying no. but this was something i could see myself having a lot of fun with, especially since it was a custom item, made to her specs, but with — the best part — freedom to do “whatever i wanted”. i had it in writing, she could not turn against me!

ahhh. i love it. creative license!

i wasn’t sure what her style was, since i hadn’t seen tara since highschool when we were locker partners, nor had i been to her place in, well, ever. she sent me a photo of her couch. and i searched some websites for fabric samples to get a feel for her taste. it’s funny, the first choice in my mind for her was exactly what she chose. a clean, crisp 100% cotton print from ikea…

ikea fabric 100% cotton

i like ikea fabrics, because they are good quality prints which hold up in the wash and are reasonably priced for medium upholstery grade (so not terribly thick, but good for most projects around the home). i also like that they do not use optical brighteners in their dyes. optical brighteners are chemicals added to dyes in fabric, and are used to absorb UV and violet light rays and re-emit light in the blue region, so that fabrics appear whiter.

the fabric has a cute tree motif, quite large actually…

cotton tree ikea fabric

the pillows she wanted covered were 19″ x 19″ so i added an inch in length (1/2″ seam allowance on each edge), found the midpoint and centered the tree there.

tree motif fabric centered before cutting

when fabric comes off a bolt, it has often shifted and when it is cut by the person at the store, it’s not always done in a straight line. you can “eyeball” a straight edge, or even measure with a ruler, but those techniques may still result in a wonky piece of fabric, especially if the sewn fabric shrinks (and twists, if not cut straight) after washing. to get a true straight edge, i pull a few strands of thread away from the edge…

threads fabric

this lets me see a line in the weaving of the fabric. cutting parallel along this line close to the frayed edge…

fabric edge being trimmed

gives a perfect, clean and true straight edge to use as a reference for measuring my project, whatever it may be.

straight edge along fabric

there are many online tutorials for making pillows. i had initially thought i was going to use the white buttons seen here…

gathered tools and fabric

…to work as the closure along the back. but the more i looked at the pillow, the more i thought it needed something more…

i decided to sew a discreet zipper along one edge instead, and gave the buttons an unconventional role amongst the trees…

pillows, finished

front and back:

front and back

thanks tara, for the chance to make something new, re-acquainting me with my studio, and letting me do whatever i wanted! :)

cute as a button.

(i’m glad it turned out to be what you wanted, too!)

you made it so: la Vie Nouveau

blog noise.

you know that scene from the movie bruce almighty, when jim carrey is suddenly able to hear everyone’s prayers in real time, and the result is deafening and overwhelming?

that’s sometimes how i feel when floating around blogland. there is a lot of chatter out there, a lot of noise. there certainly are people out there doing what they believe in, and doing a really good job of it too. but they are often hard to hear above all the noise.

but then sometimes you come across something that rings true. someone going about their biz, doing their thing.  you can sense the difference instantly between someone doing something because they are out just for the money*. or exposure. or popularity.  and those who are doing something because they truly enjoy what they are doing.

* let me be clear. i see absolutely nothing wrong with bloggers making money for blogging, as long as they are upfront about it. anyone who blogs seriously enough knows just how much time and work goes into each post. if you’ve managed to earn money for the time and energy spent doing something you enjoy, good for you. now, be a dear and let me know where i can get such a gig ;-)

when i visited la vie nouveau’s blog, it seemed to hush all that noise. her photos are great.

she writes about what she does,

visiting

what she likes,

thrifting

things she makes,

deer

things she bakes.

strawberry

i think some of my readers here may enjoy her post about making her own stamps, since we all just had a little chat about it here on iMadeItSo.

if you have the chance, take a moment and visit la vie nouveau.

follow her bike to her website, and see if you agree.  i think you might enjoy the quiet.

bad crafts happen

bad crafts happen to good people. and sometimes, some ideas are just doomed from the start.

some of you may recall this photo from a few weeks ago.
poor little birdie

well, that was just the start of it all.

let me rewind a little. i was at a thrift store when i spotted a cute little ceramic tile with that bird design on it. it was adorable! the style, the colours. totally me.

one problem: the tile was glued down to a very ugly cheeseboard.

i gave it a jiggle and tried to pry it with my fingers.  it seemed to be stuck on there pretty well. some serious epoxy from the 70s no doubt.  “they don’t make things like they used to!”

but i just couldn’t put it back and walk on. i figured there had to be a way to get the tile off and make it into something else. at the very least, i could just cut around the wood that was attached to it, and turn it into some sort of garden decor. or something. my mind has a way of wandering and wondering about such possibilities. to my detriment, at times…

so it came home with me. and i showed it to my husband and explained how i wished i could just have the tile part of it. before i could even take a before photo of it though, he had the screwdriver and hammer out, ready to chisel away at the thing.

then, i hear “oh shmmfph!”

*sigh*

the thing cracked. i wasn’t mad, as i had assumed it would break because it was old, brittle, and dang that was some serious glue!

now i was left with an even uglier cheese tray…
cheese tray wood

and i was sad to see the beautiful tile all in bits…

but then, those silly little gears in my mind got to creaking. you know, the ones attached to my creative cortex, which have been damaged by years of sleep deprivation and all that comes with motherhood. and i began to wonder if i could salvage it after all.  salvage the tile, i mean, not the creative cortex. i think that damage might be permanent.

i know! i’d make a mosaic out of it! perfect. brilliant. i needed a stepping stone in the new garden. it would be fantastic! and i would write all about it in my blog, and everyone would think “that ana, such a clever little duck!”…

(this is very much a red herring moment, to divert your attention from just how terrible an idea this actually became…well, just keep reading. you’ll see.)

so, ignore the fact that i’d never done a mosaic. and had no idea what to use to set the pieces. oh silly details, i shoo you away with a swift wafting of my magical creative hands!

went to the garage and found this…

followed the directions. (this was easier than i thought! should’ve been a clue…)

instructions fence post cement

measured and poured the mix into an old frisbee which i’d use as my mold (see? clever, clever duck!)

frisbee

placed the pieces in the cement.

mosaic tile pieces in cement

and promptly ignored the fact that it looked really quite terrible.

(by the way: denial is such an under-rated quality. denial can squash the obvious like a horse’s hoof coming down on an eggshell. it is so powerful. and blinding. and so very, very human.)

but yeah. it was pretty terrible. pictures trump denial in a heartbeat. ick.

so i set it aside, in all its wonky glory, to dry out over the next few days, letting it bask in the sun of the back porch.

the next day, mr.madeItSo and i headed out for dinner while my mother-in-law watched the kids. it was a gorgeous evening, perfect for playing outdoors, which is exactly what they did.

i came home, to this sight:

broken tile mosaic pieces cement

*sigh* i guess they really wanted to play frisbee…

like i said, some ideas are just doomed from the start.

lesson learned? just use the cheese platter next time, as is, or put it back.

well. maybe… unless! does anyone know how to make a mosaic out of a broken mosaic? or is that another one of those ideas that is better left alone? my creative cortex has been known to misfire…
