fill your cup…

quite possibly the cutest mugs i’ve ever seen. a gift from mr.madeitso…

it’s the victoria day long weekend here, which is unofficially our “safe date” for putting plants in the ground (meaning, fingers and toes crossed, there will be no more frost!)… so i’ll be avoiding the busy garden centres, and doing some projects around the house.

what will you be up to? what fills your cup and re-energizes you?

have a happy weekend.  see you tuesday…

update: may 23, 2010

for those who are wondering, the mugs are from the “boy meets girl” line at human touch, a store based out of thailand. this is not an ad for them, but i wouldn’t be opposed to receiving some of their cute pillowcases too if they happened to read this and were feeling generous ;-) (just saying! such simple, fun designs.)

under the old pine tree…

remember this little photo i mentioned here?

i spent a good part of this past weekend in the yard.  what started out as a weeding session beneath an old pine tree (to the right, in the above photo), turned into digging out the entire area. really, it was a losing battle with the weeds. there was very little actual grass left behind, the weeds were tall and some were prickly and not very friendly. the kids’ play area is nearby too, and the weeds invited wasps and the odd raccoon to leave behind telltale signs of its nightly visits. so, digging out a perimeter around the base of the old pine tree seemed like a great and easy solution at the time.

as most of my plans go, things got complicated as soon as it was too late to turn back.

it took me almost a full day to dig. it was hard earth, lots of roots, and i really need a wheelbarrow. i borrowed this from the kids to truck the dirt back to my compost pile:

once the earth was turned, and the garden bed laid out, i started thinking about what to plant under there.  but i had to keep these things in mind when making my choices:

  • acidic soil – from the pine needles that drop.
  • shade – it is a large tree, near a fence, and receives little to no sunlight.
  • drainage – the area is on an angle, sloping away from the tree towards the fence.
  • roots – the tree, being old, has a firm hold of the earth with its large roots.

with all that in mind, and the garden bed in place, i did some research and decided what plants i would try to grow. day 2 was fun, when i got to plant the goodies into the earth.

a fern that i moved from a different part of the yard…

lily of the valley, transplanted from an abundant patch in my front yard.

they come up each may, and smell sooo pretty. the rest of the summer, they fill the garden with green foliage…

these are caramel huechera (pronounced HEW-kera), a native species of north america. they’re also known as “coral bells”…

planting these was inspired by this post from willow house chronicles. i really enjoy reading her blog. she shares interesting stories and beautiful photos about her life in rural eastern ontario.

for my own records, this is the plant tag for the heuchera:

i also planted a couple of really sad looking hostas. i thinned them out from elsewhere in my yard…

wish them well.  but i think they’ll be ok…

i also planted bleeding hearts

(and again, the plant info for bleeding hearts):

the kids helped by displaying the stones and gems i uncovered as i was digging. the one at the bottom middle actually had a crystalized white mineral growing inside…

we all thought that was pretty cool.

and these two look a little startled in their new surroundings; they’re a long way from their days on the dollar-store shelf. but i think they’ll settle down with time…

rewarding work, but there were some challenges. i’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out as the plants (hopefully) grow.

this blogging thing…

when i started this blog last month, it was to inspire myself to do more. creating really does make me happy. but i was finding that the days were going by at breakneck speed, and at the end of each day, i was left wondering what i’d actually gotten done. writing things here as i go has helped me keep track. but also – as a friend shared with me recently – blogging can turn an everyday task such as cooking, gardening, or laundry…

…into a little project. i look at things a little differently now. rather than getting something done just to get it done, i enjoy the process more. stopping to smell the flowers, taking 17 photos of each of them, and such ;-)

but more than that, i have always liked to document things. as a young girl, i kept many journals.

very few survived, as the older version of myself would read my younger version’s thoughts and cringe a little and tear the paper to shreds. in highschool, i edited the school paper, and enjoyed the writing process, putting stories together and presenting them to the readers.

the interesting thing about personal blogging, unlike most writing, is that you don’t necessarily have to write to a specific audience. here, you write about whatever you’re thinking, seeing, experiencing, feeling… you present it however you want to… and the audience finds you instead. you either connect on some level with someone out there, or you don’t and you both carry on.

would i still have this blog even if nobody visited? absolutely. but it does make it that much more interesting when readers stop by.

so for whoever is reading this, thank you. for all those who have stopped by and left a comment, thanks for taking the time. really. i enjoy reading them and learning more about who is floating around out there behind this future-machine* of mine…

and this is all sounding a bit deeper than i intended, so i’ll leave you with this little diy how-to:

question: how do you make a hotdog stand?

answer: take away his chair.

(snort)

* “future-machine” is a term i use in my mind to describe any gadget like a computer, iPod, etc. i like to pretend i live in a simpler time than i actually do. yes, i realize i’m slightly delusional and completely hypocritical as i write here almost daily, and wouldn’t be able to do so were it not for these new-fandangled computing apparatuses. but hey, it’s my blog and i’ll do what i want to! ;-)

i made it so: a tisket, a tasket…

i put flowers on my bike basket. i have yet to put the basket on the bike, but that’s just a minor detail…

i started with a plain black basket. all function, no flair.

i plucked some of these off a leftover bunch of fake flowers…

the bright happy flowers had spent a few good years in my kitchen (you can get a sense for the colour-scheme of the kitchen here), but i gave them a second life last month when i used them to turn this…

into this…

recently, i used up the rest of them for my own bike basket. i plucked off the remaining flowers from the mossy base…

secured the wire around the little holes in the basket…

and here it is now:

see? much happier. the basket and i.

(tangent ahead, you were warned)

as i typed up “a tisket, a tasket”, i wondered what that even means. is it a nonsense term? like a “runcible spoon” in the poem “the owl and the pussy cat” …

They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon.

the full poem can be found here, where you can read about curious oddities, like “bong-trees” in addition to runcible spoons.

as for “a tisket, a tasket,” i knew that it came from a nursery rhyme that was later turned into a song by ella fitzgerald. (insert pause…happy sigh) ella fitzgerald pretty much introduced me to vocal jazz music. i’d like to say that she opened the door for me to discover other jazz greats, but nope, she pretty much closed the door, locked it, and swallowed the golden key. i fell in love with her voice, and that was the end of that. she sometimes lets louis armstrong in through the door, but he has to knock a certain way and say a secret password to be allowed in…

oh, but back to the nursery rhyme… it goes:

A-tisket a-tasket
A green and yellow basket
I sent a letter to my love
And on the way I dropped it

I dropped it, I dropped it
Yes, On the way I dropped it
A little girlie picked it up
And put it in her pocket

She was truckin’ on down the avenue,
Without a single thing to do
She was peck-peck-peckin all around
When she spied it on the ground

She took it she took it
my little yellow basket
And if she doesn’t bring it back
I think that I shall die
(Was it brown?) no, no,no, no,
(Was it red?) no, no,no, no,
(Was it blue?) no, no,no, no,
Just a little yellow basket

is the bolded line absolutely necessary? nursery rhymes always catch me off guard. they lull you with their happy upbeat tempo and then WHAM! out of nowhere, they throw in something really disturbing or heart-wrenchingly sad…

case in point:

rock a bye baby
on the tree top
when the wind blows
the cradle will rock
(*ahhh happy sleepy lulling numnums*)
when the bough breaks
the cradle will fall
and down will come baby
cradle and all.

horrific. i refused to sing that to my babies and use my own lyrics instead:

when the bough breaks
the cradle will fall
but mommy will catch baby
cradle and all.

(phew!)

and then there’s this one:

baa baa black sheep
have you any wool?
yes sir, yes sir,
three bags full!
(*wonderful! what a lovely black sheep*)
one for the master
(*wait for it*)
one for the dame
but none for the little boy
who cries in the lane.

isn’t it bad enough that the little boy is crying in the lane? i’m sure you could cough up a little wool for him. or at least ask him why he is crying. it’s as if this poor little guy is known to the whole village, just as the blacksmith, butcher and baker are… “oh yes, the little boy? yay high? the one who cries? yes yes, i know the one you mean guv’na. bloody cries all the time! in the lane of all places!” (note: there are other versions of this rhyme.)

brutal.

back to the happy flowers…

i shared this post on today’s creative blog.
