monday morning mail…

it’s always nice to take a break and be away from the computer for a while, which is exactly what i did this weekend. it’s even nicer to return and have some really nice messages waiting. here is one from corey. she writes about a handmade card her daughter gave her for mother’s day…

The bottom is a sheet of homemade paper with flower seeds mixed in so I can plant it directly in the ground and it will produce some lovely annuals to last me all season. The top is two layers of colorful construction paper with a message from Rhetta written on the top. All are tied together with a string of rattan – is that what that stuff is called? It’s just lovely and I’m not going to plant it. If she’ll let me I’m gonna keep it like that forever. ?

i call that ribbon “raffia”, and i have a spool of it in my kitchen drawer. i use it to tie up and dry herbs, and for wrapping little gifts. such a nice little touch, rhetta! (as an aside: apparently, raffia is made from palm trees. who knew!)

thanks for sharing, corey!

the seeded paper got me thinking. i know that places like michael’s carry that kind of paper already made in their scrapbooking section. but i wondered if there was a tutorial out there that describes how someone could make paper with seeds of their choosing. so that it could be even more personalized. herbs for someone who loves to cook, daisies for someone who loves wildflowers…

and sure enough, there was this tutorial on canadian living’s website. it seems fairly straightforward. directly from the site:

You need:
20 sheets recyclable paper (such as flyers or phone book pages)
Food colouring (optional)
Flower or herb seeds
Flannel
Sponge, paper or terry-cloth towel

the rest of the instructions are here. anyone out there want to give it a try and let me know how it turns out? c’mon! you know you want to! :-)

did you receive any adorable handmades this weekend from your kids? drop me a line and let me know. i may share it here, with your permission, of course!

have a great day!

seedlings & ramblings: walk with me in my garden…

i have a little spot in my backyard where i grow herbs. it’s a tiny 2’x2′ patch roughly, and i grow chives, mint and oregano there.

it comes up every year on its own, amongst the tulips and grape hyacinth that are scattered between them.

i honestly believe the mix of flowers and herbs makes each other thrive, some sort of symbiotic relationship which goes beyond my knowledge, but not beyond my faith in nature knowing just what to do.

there are a few weeds in there as well, which i pull up as i see them, but it’s otherwise a very low maintenance space. and like i said, it yields so much. i use the herbs in my cooking through to autumn. and i still have dried herbs from last year in jars in my pantry. it’s so nice to crush a little bit of herb mid-winter between your palms, and let that lovely scent escape as you sprinkle it into a recipe.

this year, i started a few seedlings indoors with the help of the kids. it’s still too nippy outside to place them in the ground. we planted peas, parsley, and basil.

i’m so happy they’ve sprouted!

reeeeaching towards the sunlight through the window. they can’t wait to go outside, it seems. who can blame them? i feel much the same at this time of the year.

the next challenge is finding a good spot for them. there really is only one place in the yard that gets sufficient light, in the corner. i’ll probably start with a small 4’x4′ space roughly. we also have a lot of nightly visitors (raccoons) and daily snackers (squirrels and bunnies), as well as the odd curious toddler or two, so i’m thinking of putting chicken wire up around it.

we have a lot of mature trees and they are beautiful,

with incredible colours…

but they do cast a lot of shadows. this is my favourite tree, a tulip magnolia…

big beautiful blooms…

but don’t blink or sneeze…the petals drop easily.

some of the petals fall onto this little guy. he came all the way from wales.

we have other little visitors too. gardeners aren’t supposed to like snails, but how could you not let this little one go along its path?

this ivy-covered tree reminds me of something that may belong in the secret garden. i think it has a story to tell…

(do you spy my compost bin peeking behind the trunk? it’s black)…

there’s nothing like morning dew on the lilac bush

the hostas are also getting ready to unfurl…

a lone white trillium this year, we usually have more. they love the shade, and are the provincial flower for ontario.

let’s go to the front yard, where the tulips are tall and bursting open this time of year. i wish i had more to do with their brilliance, but really, they come up every year and never fail to brighten up the yard…

hard to keep little hands off them :-)

and these gerberas don’t even look real. but they are…

i only wish this time of the year lasted a little longer. it’s just so pretty. thanks for walking through my garden with me…

have a happy weekend, and to all the moms out there, happy mother’s day!

you made it so: handmade cards

here are a few cards made by friends who shared their creations with me. thank you! i like to think that creativity is contagious (in a good way!), and i’m sure these will inspire others.

first are some cards made by jess. she keeps a great little blog about her life and her family. jess really has an eye for things, and takes wonderful photos. she keeps it all together here.

these are the cards jess made last year…

they were for friends in her blogosphere…

and she blogged about how she made them here.

aren’t they lovely? all those fluttery little hearts…

she personalized each with a nice sentiment and hand-written message inside…

the next one is from my friend laurel, who also tries to keep up with her young family. i think she does a great job, actually. when they’re not out and about on their adventures, they are often busy making great little projects at home.

these are the cards they made for the holidays a couple of years ago…

those are little thumbprints used to make little critters. how cute is that? i bet my kids would love getting their hands all inky, i’ve got to try this one!

i love the way the reindeer’s noses are touching. sweet detail! great job clara…

it doesn’t get more personalized than a fingerprint, each one is definitely unique!

isn’t handmade just the best? i’ll be sharing more soon…

thanks again jess and laurel for sharing!

here are a couple of cards i’m working on…

the thing that takes the most time, for me, is writing something inside to convey my thoughts sincerely without sounding sappy.

if you have something handmade to share with me, leave a comment or drop me a line here. i’d love to hear from you.

no, really. it’s lonely here amongst the gluesticks and cardstock ;-)

a few thoughts about spray painting…

i repaint items often. it’s a simple way to clean up something that has seen better days and give it new life. i just shared a couple of items in my bathroom renovation which i spray-painted. the two on the left were painted, the bottle/vase on the right is a pfaltzgraff original which i adore, mostly because i found it in like-new condition at the thrift store for 99 cents.

the little jug on the left holds lilacs from the garden…can you smell them? ahhh!… the jug started out as a crackled yellow thing with a kitschy-in-a-bad-way floral motif on the side, but i loved the curve of the handle and spout, and the 49 cent price tag. the candle bowl had lived its life as a seashell pink metallic twinkling sort of thing, and retired to sit on the shelf of a thrift store labeled with a 99 cent price tag, covered in a few month’s worth of dust. a quick coat of white paint on both of those items not only made them look new, but brightened up the blue walls with a crisp contrast.

or somethin like that, i’m no design expert. all i know is it looked nice to me, and that’s all that really matters in your own space…

i always spray paint outdoors. i lay out a large dropcloth or piece of cardboard. no matter how small the item is, i find that spray paint, especially the good stuff with a proper nozzle, travels and you’ll find specs of spray have wandered away. especially on windy days.

the other day, i found this chalkboard second-hand.  it was $4.99 (i had a $5 coupon for the thrift store where i had just made a donation of outgrown baby clothing). isn’t it lovely? ;-)

i placed a large cardboard box behind it to catch the spray paint, gathered my supplies and got to work…

i follow the instructions on the paint, most say spray a thin layer allowing 30 mins between coats to dry. almost all say to wait 24 hours to cure. really, do wait. i know it’s hard. but just let it sit somewhere untouched, and you’ll have a beautiful finish that you can really enjoy the next day and every day after that. rather than something with your thumbprint on it because you just couldn’t wait. ask me how i know!

back to the chalkboard…i think it looks cute in my daughter’s room, where she has already given a lesson on persuasive writing to her stuffed animals…

see what a difference a little bit of paint can make?

oh, and i always wear a mask. i have a respirator mask as well as this simple one seen here.

i was going to tell you that i am smiling under the mask. but i don’t know if that makes the photo seem more friendly, or only that much more horrific! :-)

i wonder what the neighbours think…

one more note: i make sure to return the empty spray cans to the local recycling depot for proper disposal. i am aware that aerosol cans are not environmentally friendly, and if i am going to repaint larger pieces, i use a brush and paint or a roller. this is the brush i use.

it has a replaceable head, which really makes sense. i also received another great tip when washing latex paint off paint brushes. rather than washing the paint down the drain as you clean your brush, place the brush in a container of water (an old yogurt tub works fine). and just leave it for a day or so. the paint will separate and sink to the bottom of the container. the water can go down the drain, and the paint can be discarded separately. this totally works.

ooh! and i haven’t forgotten i said i would share some handmade card ideas, i’ll try and post those soon.

meatless masala monday

i’ve been trying new vegetarian recipes lately in an effort to introduce more vegetables and legumes and less meat into our meals. i make a vegetarian dish once a week or more. we rarely eat red meat, maybe a handful of times a year. standard go-to’s here are chicken, turkey and fish.  most of the meals here seem to be centred around meat, but i’m sure that vegetarian meals can be delicious… every vegetarian tells me so! i just need to learn a repertoire of such tried-and-true meals.

also, i’m not at all hardcore about this endeavour. at this point in time, i do not wish to be a vegetarian, but i do see the benefits of vegetarian cooking and it is something i want to do more often.  if you are looking for something a little more extreme, you may want to look up happyherbivore for some great fat-free and low-fat vegan recipes and ideas. and she really does seem like a happy herbivore, check out her videos.

tonight, i decided to throw together some ingredients and see what happens. i love indian food, and over the years have realized it’s fairly easy to replicate that lovely flavourful and fragrant mix with a combination of some simple spices (see recipe below).

also, i’ve had a packet of bob’s red mill quinoa in my pantry for about a month now. having learned all three possible pronunciations of the word, i figured i was sufficiently prepared to give it a try.

the reason i bought quinoa in the first place is because i’ve read so many positive things about it. it’s a good source of fibre, with a very high protein content. it also is a good source of essential amino acids, phosphorus, and is high in magnesium and iron.

well enough chit-chat. let’s get to the recipe and photos. here’s what i ended up with, served with plain yogurt, onions and chives from the garden (and yes, you can eat those little bulbs on the chives):

here is how i made it:

ingredients:

1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed or finely chopped
1 cup spinach, coarsely sliced
2 large tomatoes, diced
1 can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and washed
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp curry powder
1 tablespoon lemon juice
dash of ginger
dash of cinnamon (yes cinnamon)
dash of salt & a few dashes of pepper (4 years of an undergrad science degree, and here i am speaking in vague “dash” measurements…my micropipetting days are long gone, it seems)
1 cup dry quinoa, cooked “al dente” (so a little firm in the middle) according to package instructions (usually 1 cup quinoa : 2 cups boiling water)

directions:

make quinoa and set aside. you want this a little undercooked because you’ll be combining it with the chickpea sauce below, and letting the quinoa cook a little further in the juices of the tomatoes.

  • in a medium saucepan, sautee the onion and garlic in a few tablespoons of water (i totally got this idea from happyherbivore, it really doesn’t make much of a difference to the taste, and you are saving a lot of calories and fat); or if you prefer, olive oil or cooking oil of your choice.
  • add spinach and stir around to cook the spinach; it will get darker as it cooks
  • add chickpeas, tomatoes and stir it all together
  • add spices and combine
  • as the tomatoes cook, the juices will start to come out; at this point, add the pre-made quinoa to the pot
  • reduce heat and simmer until the juices from the tomatoes are absorbed by the quinoa.
  • fluff it up, serve and enjoy!

it was delicious! my little one ate a whole bowl of it (and even nibbled on a chive). this will definitely go into my recipe box of meals to keep in the rotation.

you can mix it up with your own favourite spice and herb combinations. let me know if you give it a try. and also, let me know if you have any favourite meatless meals that i could try. because really, isn’t coming up with something to make for dinner the hardest part of preparing any meal? i’d appreciate the help ;-)
